Gusii Widows, Orphans and Single Mothers Ebenezer Shield (GWOSES) is a locally based Kenyan women NGO devoted to empowerment of vulnerable widows ,singlemothers and orphans.It is registered by the Kenya NGO Coordination Board in 1999.It is an initiative of widows,single mothers and orphans of Kisii ,Kenya.
The organisation currently operates programmes in rural kisii central district,Nyanza province,Kenya. VISION GWOSES is committed to the creation of a society that is just and equitable in which the disadvantaged populations especially widows, orphans andsingle mothers lead a dignified life. The organisation believes that this can only happen if the larger community is more responsive and sensitive to the needs of the under privillaged members of thecommunity. MISSION: GWOSES exists to facilitate processes that eradicate poverty and ensure a just and equitable society where all regardless of gender, creed, material wealth or tribe co-exist without any form of discrimination or harrasment. GWOSES has been involved in a number of activities in the past: - Homebassed care for HIV/AIDS patients funded by FUTURES INTERNATIONAL in 2004 - Involvement of women in making of low cost clay stoves in energy saving efforts in collaboration wih GTZ in 2006 - Micro-financing of women and youth groups in collaboration with YWCA-2004-2007 - Capacity building in management of women groups-2005-2007 GWOSES current programmatic focus is on: - Preventive care and support services in STI/HIV/AIDS - Food security among the poor especially women and children. - FGM eradication campaign in kiogoro,Kisii Central -Care and support to orphan girls in school/taking care of younger siblings. Though small,we are accountable and have created impact in the lives of widows ,single mohers and orphans in Kiogoro division,Kisii Central. IWD EVENT: GWOSE plan to keep vigil on the eve of IWD to protest against the rape of 200 women during the recent flare up of political violence in Kenya where over 1000 people have died and over 400,000 people internally displaced. The event aims at identifying with the cause of the affected women and embolden them to speak out against injustice committed on their person and push the international community and the government to bring the culprits to book.
